Look at your hands. Unless you have had an unfortunate
experience you should be looking at 10 fingers. This is the reason
why our numbering system is based on powers of 10 and is called
“base10”. The digits we use are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
The number 9543 is just our shorthand way of saying
9x10^3 + 5x10^2 + 4x10^1 + 3x10^0
or
9x1000 + 5x100 + 4x10 + 3x1
Imagine for a moment that we all had 13 fingers. The digits we
use would be 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B and C (where A, B
