Pettibone Park Gazebo
Pettibone Park is located on Barron Island, an island between the main channel and West Channel of the Mississippi River. Barron Island was originally surveyed in 1857 as an island city for its owners, Alonzo and Lucretia Barron. At the time, it was still part of Minnesota. In 1862 the land went back to Houston County for nonpayment of taxes and was later acquired by Albert Wells Pettibone who donated the land to the City of La Crosse to be used as a park. A land exchange took place between Wisconsin and Minnesota, and on May 9, 1919, the island was annexed to La Crosse.
Pettibone’s historic stone gazebo hosts dozens of wedding ceremonies each year. It was constructed in 1903 and is a Victorian Romanesque design. The gazebo is near a Frisbee golf course and close to where the Mississippi River, Black River and La Crosse River all meet.
