A construção do Castelo de Penela iniciou-se em 1097, tendo sido alvo de várias modificações ao longo dos séculos (incluindo intervenções de D. Afonso Henriques, D. Sancho I e D. Dinis). Está situado no alto da colina de São Miguel e no seu interior existe a Igreja de São Miguel. Este Castelo fazia parte da linha defensiva do Mondego, que inclui também o Castelo de Montemor-o-Velho.
As muralhas exteriores são do séc. XIV, enquanto que o Castelejo e a Porta da Vila datam do séc. XV. A Porta da Traição tem dupla abertura e estilo mourisco. A Torre do Relógio foi destruída com o terramoto de 1755, e reconstruída em 1760. Actualmente existem quatro das doze torres que em tempos teve – Porta da Traição, Porta da Vila, Torre de Menagem e Castelejo.
A partir dos anos 40 do século XX houve inúmeras intervenções de restauro, e actualmente continua a sofrer melhoramentos.
Do Castelo do Rabaçal, apenas resta um pano de muralha. Não me foi possível encontrar mais dados sobre esta fortificação. Trata-se de um local com uma vista deslumbrante sobre a Serra do Sicó, podendo-se avistar vários outros montes: Juromelo, Anteanha, Monte de Vez, para além da Vila do Rabaçal (com as suas ruínas romanas), onde existe um queijo afamado.
The Penela Castle was built in 1097, and suffered several modifications throughout centuries (including works at the times of the first kings of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, D. Sancho I e D. Dinis). It lies at the top of the St. Miguel hill, and the St. Miguel church is placed inside his walls. This castle was part of several castles along the Mondego river, which included the Montemor-o-Velho castle.
The outside walls were built in the XIVth century, while two of his doors (Castelejo and Porta da Vila) date from the XVth century. The Porta da Traição has a double opening and a Moorish style. The Torre do Relógio (Watch Tower) was destroyed in 1755 earthquake, but it was rebuilt in 1760. Nowadays the castle has four of the twelve towers that once had – Porta da Traição, Porta da Vila, Torre de Menagem e Casteleio.
In the XXth century, namely in the fourties, there were important works of rebuilding. Nowadays it is still suffering some reconstruction.
The sole remains of the castle of Rabaçal are a big wall, and some minor ruins. I wasn’t able to find more data about this castle. Anyway it is a beautiful place, with great views over the Serra do Sicó, and some other hills: Juromelo, Anteanha, and Monte de Vez. We can also see the Rabaçal village, which has some roman ruins and a famous cheese.
Cache
Penela está situada a escassos 15 km de Condeixa, muito próxima da saída 11 da A1. Está situada na IC3 (Coimbra-Tomar).
Esta cache é uma multi-cache constituída por uma Micro (nas coordenadas iniciais) e uma cache regular nas coordenadas finais (que se encontram na Micro inicial).
A Micro está colocada no exterior do Castelo, pelo que não existe necessidade de pagar bilhete ou estar sujeito a horários, num caminho que rodeia o Castelo (e se inicia numas casas-de-banho).
Para a cache final deve tomar a estrada que leva de Penela ao Rabaçal (cruzamento em N 40º 01.843 W 008º 24.509). Os 500 m finais são feitos a pé ou de bicicleta todo-o-terreno. Atenção: a cache final está localizada num local de caça (5ªs feiras e Domingos).
Penela is located 15 km away from Condeixa, close from the highway A1 (exit 11), in the IC3 road (Coimbra-Tomar).
This is a multi-cache. The first one is a Micro (placed at the initial coordinates) and a regular cahe at the final coordinates (this information is inside the Micro).
The Micro is placed outside the walls of the castle (so you don’t need to pay any ticket and you can search it at any time), in a path that surrounds the Castle (the path begins near a toilet).
To reach the final cache you must follow the road from Penela to Rabaçal (crossing at N 40º 01.843 W 008º 24.509). You must walk the final 500m (or do it in a mountain bike). All the other instructions are inside the Micro. Be careful: the final cache is located in a hunting zone (there can be hunting on thursdays and sundays, in some months).
