Geocache Description:

Bring a camera and binoculars, as this cache is a real treat with spectacular views! It offers a chance to actually experience the top of a mountain with minimal exertion. The cache is located way up at 9,248 feet, near the top of Bald Mountain. Bald Mountain also sports a fire lookout tower at its top, with a friendly ranger who just might invite you up for a look.

Have relocated our Bald Mountain Cache (GCKQ3H) to a place less likely to be muggled (original was found to be missing). New coordinates of the cache are 36 01.741N 118 15.654W.

This cache is not always accessible, as the area usually closes for the winter with lots of snow. From November through early May, recommend calling ahead to the Cannell Ranger Station at (760) 376-3795 to inquire of road conditions/closures.

Directions: Leave the Sherman Pass Road at the lookout turnoff at coordinates 36-01.908 N 118 15.968W. Proceed up this dirt road for approximately 1 mile. Park on the jeep trail turnoff to your left, get out of car, and go find the cache. Except for huge RV's, most vehicles should be able to make it to the cache easily. After finding the cache, continue up the main road (the right fork, not the left fork jeep trail). The road ends at a closed gate, and parking lot for the lookout tower. From the parking lot, hike 1/4 mile up either the road behind the gate, or the "scenic" trail to the tower. You'll be awed by the 360 degree view from the top. Try to spot Mount Whitney, Olancha Peak, Owen's Peak, the Domelands (it's the best view available of this wilderness), etc... . Oh, and bring a picnic lunch! There's a picnic table at the top.

This is a good sized cache. But remember, the real treasure is the mountain itself. Original contents of the cache were: A logbook and pencil, and lots and lots of new toys, some pretty cool.

If you have time after finding the cache, explore the Sherman Pass Road from Sherman Pass (we have another cache there "Sherman Pass Cache" ), to Blackrock Ranger Station. It's one of the prettiest mountain roads, with numerous meadows, peaks, and trails to explore. It's also a great place for picnicking, camping, horseback riding (Paloma Meadows has corrals), and also excellent hiking, 4WD, and OHV trails.
