This is near a Titan I Missile Site that has been abandoned for 40 years. The Missile Silos are located about 300ft from the cache. Most of the site is located underground covered by dirt and 32,000 yards of concrete. There is 90 miles of cable, 300 tons of piping, and 1800 separate supply items at each missile site. A fire station now sits at the end of part of the site. Just over the fence you can see the concrete door that covered one of the missile silos.
The historical significance of this site is what made me decide to place a cache here. Forty years ago this site was one of 3 in the area that housed the Titan I ICBM’s. In 1959 the military determined that Beale AFB would be a good location to put a missile base. Construction began in January of 1960 on the 3 sites attached to Beale. The sites were located in Lincoln, Sutter Buttes, and Chico. Each site would consist of 3 missiles sporting a 4 megaton thermonuclear warhead. All 3 sites were deactivated in 1965 because of the phase out of the Titan I ICBMs.
Beale AFB was one of 5 locations in the United States that had the Titan I. Each base had a total of nine missiles and 1 spare. All Titan I missile silos have been closed and the missiles either destroyed or reused. Many of the old missile sites are owned privately or are up for sale. I just found it interesting to know that we at one time had 9 thermonuclear warheads right in our backyards. Everything I learned about these missile sites I found on (visit link) This site has links to other info on the Titan I's, or a search on the internet will return many hits.
If anyone has any historical information on any of these Missile sites, please post it so we can all learn. I have attached a picture of what the site looks like.
This is our first cache.
The cache is now a point of interest since someone is taking the contents. No container to find, but interesting historical place.
