New electrical generation industry initiated in SW Pennsylvania. DECOMMISIONED! ! 8/29/18
Access:
DECOMMISIONED! ! 8/29/18
• Fairly easy by passenger car to general cache location.
• Follow map or GPS to Garrett, PA and continue to Decker Road (T-506) off Schrock Road (T-385).
• After passing along windmills and farms on ridge, proceed carefully along short two-track road to the closed gates near base of windmill tower.
• PLEASE DO NOT GO THROUGH GATES, OVER FENCES, OR ACROSS FARM FIELDS.
• NOTE: Turn around at end of two-track road very tight, with drop off.
Additional Information:
• Cache moved to this location in December 2007 after construction at Arnold Substation compromised the original cache placed 6/29/01 at the other end of this initial Somerset County windmill farm.
• This renewed cache has been placed with the kind permission of the Elvin and Maria Yoder Family (and Daisy). Please take care to leave the area as found.
• The new location has slightly increased the difficulty/topography ratings.
• We noticed the original cache’s site deteriorate with each subsequent maintenance visit. A nearby souvenir shop, adjacent to a private home, closed. The initial cache location, just off the then-visitor parking lot, has been significantly modified. The displays from the 2001 inauguration of the windmills are all gone. The impressive interpretive boards on wind power, and the engraved plaques dedicated to donors and collaborators at that site, have now been removed, along with the parking plaza. These were put up with a splash of regional publicity and a community BBQ in 2001.
• Maybe the windmills have just become “HO HUMM” in Somerset County. Now there are about a dozen more windmills on the adjacent Casselman Ridge (Rockdale Rd.SR-2016), several above Cranberry Glade Lake, and around 30 above Meyersdale, all in just this southern corner of the County.
• The novelty has diminished after all of the hoopla surrounding the start-up of this wind farm, the FIRST electricity-generating wind farm in southwestern Pennsylvania. BUT the cache, where now relocated nearby, remains valid, and gives access to reasonably close-up
views of these power-for-the-future structures!
