The cache is in a small ammo box at an elevation of 4355 feet. It is near the end of a traversabe dirt road often used by rock climbers. (+++That road has been closed.(+++ One must now walk to get near the cache+++)
This rock, and soil on which this cache is placed is named the Bishop Tuff It is brown, pinkish, sometimes white, or black pyroclastic ejecta from a volcanic explosion hundreds of times larger than the more recent explosive event at Mt. Saint Helens. This explosion ocured around 760,000 years ago, forming the Long Valley Caldera and ejected an estimated 150 cubic miles of Bishop Tuff. Bishop Tuff from this event can be found as far away as Kansas, and Nebraska.
