Duck Dash Debut
It’s a Duck Eat Duck World Out There…
On August 30, 2001, Geocaching.com Founder Jeremy Irish activated the world’s first trackable, TB1.
Jeremy says, “When we first started Travel Bugs, I released 7 Deadly Ducks in the wild.” Each of the new trackables were based on one of the deadly sins. These Deadly Ducks, with the names of Envy, Sloth, Pride, Gluttony, Lust, and Wrath, headed out into the world to travel from geocache to geocache. (The Greed Deadly Duck was placed in a geocache that was never listed on Geocaching.com and may still be hidden in Virginia.)
Thus began a game within a game: trackables. Today there are more than 2,655,951 trackables traveling around the world — making friends, creating memories and patiently waiting to complete their mission.
In honor of the 15th anniversary of trackables, we’re hosting a worldwide trackable race featuring the reincarnated Deadly Ducks. You’re invited to enter!
The race will begin worldwide on 20 July 2016 at 12:01 AM PST (which is 5:01 PM AEST).

The Event
Wednesday, 20 July 2016
5.00 - 5.45 pm
At the posted coordinates you will find a BBQ area. I don't expect to find many people nearby at the event time but there are plenty of tables and we'll gather around whichever is free. I'll have my ducks on the table so you can easily find the right spot! Remember to rug up as the foreshore can get a bit chilly.
Suggested Parking (S 37° 52.801 E 144° 58.642)
There is plenty of parking along Marine Parade. Check signs for restrictions as some areas (such as along Point Ormond Road) require a ticket.
Event Details
This is a short outdoor event to launch your ducks into the wild. It's also my first time hosting a geocaching event! I'll have a few lollies to snack on and will hold a draw for FTF.
The event is timed to match the start time of the race and should also mean we're around just in time to see the sunset. Although the event is designed to allow people to launch their ducks (see below for instructions), feel free to join us even if you don't intend to enter the race. It's always fun to meet local cachers and you'll still be able to help by moving some ducks onto their first caches.
As usual, bring along any other trackables so others can discover and swap.
Hope to see you there!
How to enter a duck into the race
- Get an unactivated trackable; either an official Deadly Duck TB or any other TB that has no prior travel history. See the list here for official suppliers.
- Activate it.
- Give it a mission, remembering to include instructions to get your trackable to a geocaching event on 20 August, International Geocaching Day.
- If you're not using one of the official Deadly Duck TB's, fill out this signup form (by 17 July). Official Deadly Ducks are automatically entered.
- Enjoy the race!
Note: These are a simplified version of the instructions provided by Groundspeak. For the full details, and all the race rules, be sure to check the announcement here.
