The Centennial Drive street event was a big deal back in the 1960s but discontinued in the late 1970s.
The images below are grabbed from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoGuIzvu0Dc - a 6-minute video clip of the 1966 Paritutu Street Race. Hundreds of enthusiastic motor racing fans gather below the slopes of Paritutu, to watch over 16 events on the raceway circuit, featuring Minis, motorcycles, single-seater F3s, Ford Anglias etc. But this being before the time of cheap Japanese imports, cars from GB and USA mainly.
Races were reinstated about 2008 when competitors raced around the 1.3-kilometre track three times, with the fastest cars clocking about 2m 13s. Some cars reached speeds of 170kmh along the straights. From memory the last race was about 2012.
