This cache is located on the upper
reaches of Spearfish Canyon and is best reached from the top off
the Spearfish Mtn Trail, a primative road that requires a high
clearance(4X4) vehicle. Bring water, watch out for steep slopes and
poison ivy.
These caches are 50 cal. ammo boxes. This is a two stage cache. The
first cache contains the coordinates of the lost cabin. Directions
to the first cache are as follows. From Spearfish take Christiansen
Drive south past Chris's Campground about a mile and a half. Turn
right into the State Game and Bald Eagle Viewing Area. Follow the
main road to the Forest Boundary. The road will be 628. Take that
till you come to a T. Turn left on road 220. Park along this road
when you are directly east of the cache, or at about 44 24.993N,
103 51.468W. The first ammo box will have the coordinates for the
Lost Cabin. There is a very steep descent ahead so be careful.
There is also in the first cache a clue for a possible easier
route. On the way out after placing the cache we discovered the
wagon road that the miners must have used to access the area where
the cabin is located. We did not follow it back down to see where
exactly it leads. Please keep the integrity of this area and it's
historical features the way you found them.
Fire pig(Cache & Cerry) is moving out of the area, and offered
this cache to me for adoption.I'm happy to 'take over' this
classic, it was one of my first caches I found, and still stands out as one
of the best.
