A cryptic crossword clue is usually made up of two parts, both relating to the same word. The first part may be any of several types of cryptic clues - an anagram with another word as an anagram indictor; an indicator that the word you are looking for is hidden in the sentence; a list of symbols to put together to make a word; a combination of these; a sounds-like; or simply a pun. The second part is usually a synonym of the word you are looking for. These are only half-clues - instead of a synonym, all you know is that they clue is for a number. The number in brackets following the clue tells you how many letters in the answer.
Think very concretely - the answer almost invariably has nothing to do with what you think the clue means! Have fun!
