Dublin City Fruit, Vegetable & Flower Market is housed in a magnificant late Victorian hall. A beautiful building with a multitude of ornate features, its future is a most vexed issue.
The changing nature of storage, transport and distribution systems has already led to the demise of the adjacent fish market, now converted into an anonymous carpark.
A dramatic decline in footfall, combined with rent increases, has resulted in some of the best known traders leaving the market in 2012. The buzz of excitement enjoyed by traders and shoppers for decades has been replaced by an air of despair. This is all a far cry from the 2005 plans for a near half-billion redevelopment of the building and surrounding streets into a new Market Square area. That particular dream is now well and truly buried.
Work on the ceiling, including rewiring and painting, has been going on throughout the past year, with many traders complaining that the construction of the entire building in 1892 was quicker. Trading in the centre of a building site has been difficult, and while the wholesale side of the business has survived, the retail customer has disappeared.
Despite all this, a visit to the market is always a rewarding experience. The most recently touted plan for this Dublin institution is the creation of an artisan foodhall.
The cache is small and located outside the building. Early-morning cachers will witness the market in full flight. The main business is conducted from 5.30 am to 9.30 am. However, the building is usually open until around 4 pm. At all times, beware of forklifts.
