“Instruir, divertindo” - “Monet Oblectando”
Um marco de devoção, tragédia, educação, mistério e cultura.

Lethes - designação de um mítico rio, cujas águas tinham o poder mágico de apagar da lembrança das almas os reveses e as amarguras da vida.

O edifício que hoje se designa por Teatro Lethes começou por ser um colégio de Jesuítas - Colégio de Santiago Maior (fundado pelo então Bispo do Algarve D. Fernando Martins Mascarenhas), cuja licença lhes foi concedida em 8 de Fevereiro de 1599. Era um local de aprendizagem.
Em 1759, a Companhia de Jesus foi banida do país e foram confiscados os bens. O Colégio de Santiago Maior encerrou assim as suas portas.
Com a ocupação das tropas napoleónicas comandadas pelo General Junot, as instalações do antigo Colégio foram devassadas e profanadas para aí alojarem os seus soldados. Anos mais tarde, em 1843, foi o Colégio arrematado em hasta pública pelo Dr. Lazaro Doglioni, que manifestara publicamente a sua intenção de construir em Faro um teatro à semelhança do S. Carlos de Lisboa. A inscrição latina na fachada do edifício, "monet oblectando", poderá ser traduzida por "instruir, divertindo", salientando assim as preocupações culturais do promotor da construção desta sala de espectáculos.
A inauguração do teatro efectuou-se a 4 de Abril de 1845, associando-se às comemorações do aniversário da Rainha D. Maria II, tendo sido ampliado pelo seu sobrinho, Dr. Justino Cúmano, em 1860.
A 11 de Setembro de 1898 exibia-se pela primeira vez em Faro o chamado animatógrafo, tendo-se então instalado no Teatro Lethes por ser o mais amplo e distinto espaço cultural da cidade.
Foi restaurado entre 1906 e 1908 para melhorias de acústica e conforto.
O declínio dos espectáculos e consequentemente da sala começa em 1920, encerrando-se o teatro em 1925, tendo sido vendido o imóvel à Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa, em cuja posse ainda se mantém.
A sala do Teatro Lethes encontra-se cedida por protocolo à Delegação Regional do Algarve do Ministério da Cultura e na Ala Norte, restaurada e adaptada em 1991, funcionam os serviços regionais do Ministério da Cultura.

A Sala de espectáculos ainda hoje é palco de inúmeras peças de teatro, sendo um local dotado de uma incrível mística artística, dentro da sua magnifica e subtil pequenez.

O Fantasma da Bailarina do Teatro Lethes

O Teatro conta ainda com uma misteriosa e permanente presença – A bailarina do Teatro Lethes – figura mística e fantasmagórica que ainda hoje exerce presença em quem lá passa as noites. Reza a história que uma bailarina se enforcou à anos no teatro, tendo sido observado por alguns trabalhadores do teatro que fugiram em pânico. Ainda hoje quem lá trabalha ouve ocasionalmente à noite os passos da Bailarina.

"Educate, having fun" - "Monet Oblectando"

A landmark of devotion, tragedy, education, mystery.and culture.

Lethes - the name of a mythical river, whose waters had the magical power to erase the memory of the souls setbacks and hardships of life).

The building that today is known as Lethes Theatre began as a college of Jesuits - College of Santiago Major (founded by the then Bishop of the Algarve Fernando Martins Mascarenhas), whose license was granted on February 8, 1599. It was a place for learning.
In 1759, the Society of Jesus was banished from the country and confiscated all goods. The College of Santiago Maior shut its doors.
With the occupation of the Napoleonic troops commanded by General Junot, the facilities of the old College where desecrated and discovered, so they can host their soldiers.
Years later, in 1843, the College was fetched at auction by Dr. Lazaro Doglioni, who publicly expressed their intention to build a theater in Faro similar to S. Carlos in Lisbon. The Latin inscription on the facade of the building, "monet oblectando" may be translated "educate, having fun," thereby emphasizing the cultural concerns of the promoter of the construction of this hall.
The inauguration of the theater took place on April 4, 1845, by joining the celebrations of the anniversary of Queen Mary II, was enlarged by his nephew, Dr. Justino Cumano in 1860.
The 11th September 1898 appeared for the first time in Faro one “Animatógrafo” (Animation place), and it was installed in the Lethes Theatre, being the most comprehensive and distinct cultural area of the city.
It was restored between 1906 and 1908 to improve acoustics and comfort.
The decline of the performances and consequently the theatre, begins in 1920, ending the theater in 1925, having been sold the property to the Portuguese Red Cross, in whose possession still remains.
The Lethes theater room has Protocol to the Algarve Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Culture, restored and adapted in 1991, the regional work of the Ministry of Culture.

The entertainment room is still the scene of numerous plays, being a place with an incredible artistic mystic within its magnificent and subtle smallness.

The Phantom of the Ballerina of Lethes Theatre

The Theatre also has a mysterious and permanent presence - The ballerina of the Theatre Lethes - spooky and mystical figure that still has a presence in who there spend the night. The story goes that some dancer hung himself in the theater, having been observed by some workers of the theater who ran in panic. Who still works there occasionally hears at night the footsteps of the dancer.
