Hand Safety - 100% Glove Policy Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Beyond Safety: This cache was part of the Beyond Safety Hand Safety series that was used to help generate geocaching in our workplace at Ames Research Center. Thanks to everyone that helped in the effort. It's time to archive the series so that cachers can have new reasons to come out to the ponds.

Geocache Description:

It's time for our second safety themed geocache series. This time around the theme is Hand Safety! We can't reach our goal of ZERO injuries until we eliminate ALL hand injuries.

The physical cache is a tupperware container located adjacent to the Sunnyvale Water Treatment ponds. Please keep in mind that there is a healthy gopher snake population in the area, and at times the bugs are thicker than the stench in the air. Safety glasses are not an uncommon sight on these trails.

The Hand Safety cache series was placed with your safety in mind. Before you take a step off the trail to make the grab, look to the west where you'll see the spectacular facilities that make up the Beyond Safety workplace at NASA Ames Research Center. You'll only need to take one step off the trail for this grab. The cache is a tupperware container with plenty of room for tradeables. Please check carefully for any of the local wildlife that may also enjoy this hiding place.

The goal of this cache is to recommend that you establish a 100% Glove Policy like the policy in place in the Beyond Safety workplace at Ames.

Our understanding of injury prevention is moving forward at an exponential rate. In the Beyond Safety workplace we know that wearing the APPROPRIATE hand protection can eliminate or minimize a hand injury when a hand is exposed to a hazard. If we intend to eliminate hand injuries, we’ll have to plan our work so that gloves are the LAST LINE of defense. We'll also need to follow a 100% Glove Policy that requires us to not only use gloves for all tasks that require gloves, but that we wear gloves that are appropriate for the task. Below is the 100% Glove Policy in place in the Beyond Safety workplace.

In the Beyond Safety Workplace, our Glove Policy is simple:

100% of the time that we are engaged in
working with our hands or working on a
field work site, we will wear gloves that
are appropriate to the task.

There are some possible exceptions,
such as lunchrooms, restrooms, or inside
an office; any other exceptions should be
thoughtful and not made casually.”
