ALOHA from O'ahu
---Kukaniloko Birthstones---
Kūkaniloko Birthstones is one of the most significant cultural sites on O'ahu. This was recognized by the listing of the site on the National and Hawai'i Registers of Historic Places. A five-acre parcel encompassing the site was acquired by the State of Hawai'i in 1992 and placed under the jurisdiction of State Parks to preserve and interpret this important historic site.
Kūkaniloko, meaning "to anchor the cry from within," is the geographic piko (navel) of O'ahu. Kūkaniloko was symbolically the most powerful birth site for the island's high chiefs. At this site, women gave birth to ali'i (royal) children, surrounded by ali'i witnesses.
The associated Ho'olonopahu Heiau (temple) was destroyed, as were many others in the area, to make room for sugarcane and pineapple fields. Many important battles between rivals for control of O'ahu were also fought on the central plains surrounding Kūkaniloko.
The broad view of the skies from Kūkaniloko might also have made it a Hawaiian astronomical site. In April 2000, a team from the University of Hawai'i Institute for Astronomy recorded designs and shapes on the stones that could have been used to track the movements of celestial objects.
In 2012, The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) acquired the 511 acres surrounding Kūkaniloko to protect and preserve the site by providing a buffer against development and ensuring that future uses of the area are consistent with Hawai'i’s cultural values. Recently the site has been closed and security guards are sometimes stationed at the entry to stop visitors from approaching the stones.
