Geocache Description:

THIS CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED CO-ORDINATES, you will have to solve the puzzle to get those.

I was out in the Sibbald area on one of my hikes a few years ago when I found a flat black rock with the outline of a scary looking creature scratched into its’ surface.

This find certainly intrigued me so I spent many, many hours searching for clues on the web. I looked for ancient myth stories of such creatures existing in this area. I began to uncover small bits of information that had been passed down through the ages by the first peoples of the land. These stories told of events in ages past, of monsters and giants and of great battles. Maybe these stories originated in a different reality, who knows? Anyway, I was able to piece together enough information to assemble an image of what it may have looked like and to find a name or at least a string of symbols that may represent its’ name, of course it may mean something entirely different. I was able to interpret the ancient nordic looking alphabet except for two symbols which I replaced with their modern English equivalents. Unfortunately, the translation still didn’t make any sense so there must be more to it than I figured. I was able to determine though, that this creature was immense, to us it was inconceivably big and it was the last of its’ kind!

Apparently there was also a race of giant humanoid beings that co-existed with these creatures. The Giants continually warred against the creatures, eventually destroying all but one of them. The cost was very high, ultimately resulting in the sacrifice of all but a few the giant warriors. The really interesting thing is that the final battle between the last creature and one of the remaining Giants took place around here! The Giant was able to gain access to a weakness in the armour of his Foe and drive an enchanted sword into this Achilles heel to slay the creature. Unfortunately, during its’ death throes the creature grabbed the heroic Warrior in its’ mandibles and tore him asunder.

The world turned, ages past, oceans came, sediments covered the land, uplift occurred and the oceans drained away, rivers came and went, glaciers advanced and retreated, the land was carved, reshaped and eroded into the surface we see today. I scoured the area topo maps to see if any erosional features would yield a clue. Sure enough I soon detected a form that looked, well let’s say, convincing even though it had been much modified by structural activity. I just had to check it out!

Since then, I have spent many hours searching the area and have found some very interesting things which indicate that there may be some truth to the myth! I decided to hide two caches in order to encourage my geocaching friends to take this trip and get their opinion on the whole thing. I didn’t want this earth shaking discovery revealed to the world as that would cause endless problems, having to re-write history and all that, so the co-ordinates are hidden in a puzzle. When the correct co-ordinates are submitted to the checker both locations will be revealed as well as detailed route information. This is difficult country to travel across!

Oh, by the way, it is said that a few Giants still roam the land, just out of our sight, in case they are once more needed. You know, to battle evil and such things. I think I even located a spot where one of them occasionally sits to keep watch. It is right above “The Warrior’s Hand” cache (GC2MGJ0).
