Geocache Description:

Located at a cypress tree that was left standing during the logging era.

Cache is located on SWFWMD lands just south of the nearby Hillsborough River State Park property.

Cache is small but easy to see. Look at the notch. Loggers cut a notch in cypress trees to place a spring board elevating the faller above the swelled base of the cypress. I wonder if this was a logging notch, or if it is a notch cut to define the nearby section line originally surveyed in the mid 1800’s. This tree probably had enough damage to keep loggers from cutting it down.

If you keep heading west (N80°W) for about 900 feet you will intersect the Hillsborough River as it flows through 17 runs. At this place you can see the arrow pointing paddlers west, designed to keep them heading the right direction to Sargeant Park. I first saw the arrow about 20 years ago. The day of the cache placement was the first time that I walked to it.

This area can be wet. I crossed a few places that were ankle deep while placing the cache. It will be deeper during the rainy season. Bring a pen to sign the log. Enjoy, be safe.
