This cache is located on the trail PRC11PIC, in Calheta de Nesquim, already near that parish, on a path flanked by vineyards and near a whale observation vantage point (observation tower called "look-out post").

O nome dado à Freguesia da Calheta de Nesquim advém de uma curiosa história que remonta ao século XVII. Assim, por volta de 1680, junto à costa e perto de um morro bem alto, um homem chegado de algures no seu barco, diz para o cão”Salta Nesquim”, ficando aquele lugar baptizado pelo Morro do Cão (depois Morricão). Posteriormente, devido à sua estrutura geográfica, foi denominado de Calheta, juntando-se-lhe o nome do cão Nesquim.
A freguesia da Calheta de Nesquim possui um antigo e importante porto que foi, em tempos, uma activa base baleeira. Aqui nasceu, em 1876, a primeira “armação” de caça ao cachalote, resultado de um contrato assinado entre os Dabney da Horta e o capitão Anselmo da Silveira.
Neste importante porto de baleação é digna de visita uma antiga casa de botes, hoje recuperada, onde se podem encontrar botes idênticos da caça à baleia, bem como fotografias de antigos baleeiros da Calheta de Nesquim.
The name of Calheta de Nesquim comes from a curious tale which goes back to the 17th century: in around 1680, next to the coast, near a tall hill, a man who had returned from a boat trip, ordered His dog, Nesquim to jump, crying “Salta Nesquim”, and the place was called Morro do Cão (later Morricão), or Dog´s Hill. Later, due to its geographic structure, it was named Calheta (harbour), and the dog’s name, Nesquim, was added.
The parish of Calheta de Nesquim has an old, important port, which used to be an active whaling port. It was here that the first whale hunting “fleet” was born, in 1876, the result of a contract between the Dabney family, in Horta, and Captain Anselmo da Silveira.
It is worth visiting this port to see the old whaling boathouse, now restored, where there are authentic whaleboats, as well as photographs of the old whalers of Calheta de Nesquim.
