Geocache Description:

An easy 2-stop multi. Safe for children with some supervision.

This area was a boomtown during the California gold rush that started in 1848. Even today the good and not-so-good effects of this industry are still visible in the landscape and culture of the towns that remain.

We understand that the main methods of obtaining gold in Northern California were placer mining (using gold pans, sluice boxes and rockers), hard rock mining where the gold is still embedded in the rock, and hydraulic mining. This method utilized water at very high pressure to break down hillsides and then wash away the gravel and silt. This process proved to be destructive both to the mining location and to the lands which received the discharge of the sediments produced. This process was essentially stopped in Northern CA by 1882.

In the cliffs near the freeway between Gold Run and Dutch Flat we can see the scars left by hydraulic mining during the boom times of 1865 to 1878. The quaint towns of Gold Run and Dutch Flat are a legacy of those times.

This cache contains samples of quartz and pyrite (for FTF) which may interest historians or rock collectors. Feel free to exchange.
