Come to place where women of Drvenik fought against Turkish soldiers.
Drvenik is a littoral tourist village of the Makarska Riviera, about 30 km distant from Makarska. Situated between the steep cliffs of the mountain Biokovo and the coast with beautiful beaches. Drvenik is a well-known tourist village oriented entirely toward development of tourist industry. The modern village is divided in two parts, situated in two valleys denominated Donja Vala and Gornja Vala.
The history of Drvenik dates far back into the past to the 13th century. Till earthquake in 1962 inhabitants lived in place called Upper Drvenik (Gornje Selo) under the Biokovo mountains, then they moved to coast to Donja and Gornja Vala. In Upper Drvenik you can find Gothic St George's church. The oldest part of the church dates back in 15th century. Church is renovated several times, later also in the baroque style, and in 1887 was expanded because the number of local population has increased. During the construction the old tombstones were added into the church walls. The church characterizes eight-petal rose window on the front and on the top there is an ornamented church-tower with two bells. Inside the church there is a large marble altar decorated with the St George's sculpture.
Close to Upper Drvenik (Gornje Selo) on the top of the rocky hill are ruins of old fortress from 17th century called Gradina. Gradina served as a rescue in the time of Turkish occupation. In 1687 Turkish soldiers attacked Gradina, where was only women and children and killed all people. All men from Drvenik at that time served in navy. On the place of the massacre is today memorial tablet. From the recommended start point and parking place to memorial tablet is tourist path with red signs, the trip takes just few minutes.
