CANCELED!!!
Extend the Summer Solstice event into Sunday to meet for caffeine, grab a canoe or kayak, and paddle the Root River. This is a 1/1 for the caffeine part and gets way tougher for the river aspect. You know you're gonna love it!
CANCELED!!!CANCELED!!!CANCELED!!!CANCELED!!!
AM CANCELING THIS EVENT.
Sad to say, water remains high after flooding. There's a great volume of water, as shown by the river gage: Daily discharge statistics, in cfs, for Jun 17 based on 2 years of record: Min(2007) - 387; Mean - 514; Median - 514; Max(2006) - 614; Most Recent Instantaneous Value - 1,640. Yes, that's 3x the typical discharge. So will cancel. The event without any paddling is not what I'd envisioned. Will consider trying to hold again. I do encourage people to think about doing the "Root of All Evil" cache series with or without a set event, although the latter would certainly be fun. Look forward to seeing folks at accordiongal and DOC's event the day before, at Isinours. Have a feeling that finding all those caches may well continue into Sunday anyway!
What a great way to celebrate the official start to summer! The event the day before at Isinours hosted by accordiongal and DOC. - camping - and then a canoe trip! (yes, picking up a few caches along the way)
***EVENT UPDATE AS OF JUNE 8!!! I am moving the meeting place for the CAFFEINE end of things to a small coffee, ice cream and sandwich shop in Lanesboro called River Trail Picnic Basket, located at 100 Parkway Ave North downtown. It's right by the bike trail and also has outdoor seating. No indoor seating. Phone (in case you need to check in with us) is (507)467-3556. The owner knows we'll be rolling in that day. ***NEW MEETING TIME: 8 A.M.*** AND WE PLAN TO LEAVE THE SHOP AT 9:30 A.M. TO START SHUTTLING VEHICLES TO THE BEGINNING AND ENDING POINTS OF THE TRIP. The beginning is at Moen's Bridge, where the first cache for "The Root of All Evil Series" is located (so get coordinates for the beginning point from that cache listing). We will conclude the trip at the DNR canoe landing 1.5 miles northeast of Lanesboro on Highway 16. (previous information given regarding all this has been removed from the listing to avoid confusion) This trip will be around 13 miles and run approximately 4 to 4.5 hours, depending on river current, time spent finding caches, swimming, taking a break to eat a lunch you've packed along, etc. Search on this website for "Root of All Evil" to get the information on the four caches in the series. The final is a puzzle and YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE ALONG DECODING INFORMATION PROVIDED ON THE THREE PRELIMINARY CACHE PAGES. There may or may not be other caches planted before this trip. (A planned trip on the Root on June 7 was canceled due to storms and flooding. I may or may not get out on the river before this event. If I can, I will - that's all I can promise as to the placement of more caches.)
***DISCLAIMER!!!!*** You need to have along - and preferably WEAR(!!) - a life jacket to participate in this trip. You are responsible for your own safety and skill level regarding the difficulties of deciding to paddle and then paddling this river. IF WEATHER IS THREATENING, THE PADDLE WILL BE CANCELED.** As the planner, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE for problems anyone has. (anyhoo, you try to sue me, you'd be sadly unhappy with the lack of monetary funds available ;-P) for your general enjoyment and safety. Whew!! Glad we got that out of the way! LOL!
I have posted information on canoe and kayak rentals in an entry below, as that info was not allowed up in this part of the cache event narrative. Please write me if you think you'll be renting, just so I have some idea on planning shuttles - BUT CONTACT THE CANOE/KAYAK RENTAL PLACE DIRECTLY TO SET UP A RENTAL.Thanks!!! :-)
