HNL Zoo Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Greatland Reviewer: Dear GeoGerms,

I have been going through caches that have multiple "DNF" (did not find) logs, which is often a sign that a cache is missing. Generally cachers avoid hunting a cache with many DNF logs, so it is a good idea for the Cache Owner to check the cache and either replace it or post a log to the cache page to tell fellow geocachers that the cache is still there, but they might need new eyeglasses. No action by the Cache Owner may result in a cache being archived to keep the cache from appearing in local Pocket Queries.

Please reenable the cache page after you have maintained your cache. To reenable the cache, go to the cache from your Account page on GC.com. Under "Admin Tools" in the upper right-hand corner, click "Enable," write your note and click "Submit log entry."

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Geocache Description:

First off, the cache. You do not need to enter the zoo to find it. It is located in the parking lot near what was an entrance in, what can be, a muggle rich environment. Due to the unfortunate homeless situation in the area, hunting the cache at night is not advised. Nearby parking is metered. Please remember to cover it up well.

The Honolulu Zoo is located between the slopes of Diamond Head and Waikiki at the corner of Kapahulu Ave. and Kalakaua Blvd. The Zoo is administered by the Honolulu Zoo Society, a non-profit organization, and is maintained by a corps of volunteers. It is owned by the City & County of Honolulu through the Auditoriums Department. The hours of operation are 9:00 am to 4:30 pm daily (closed on Christmas Day). Admission is as follows (Local I.D. required for kama'aina price):

  • General Admission (13 years and older) $14.
  • Children (3-12 years with adult 18 years and older) $6.
  • Kama'aina (13 years and older with local I.D.) $8.
  • Kama'aina Keiki (3-12 years with adult 18 years and older) $4.
  • Children (2 years and under with adult) free.
  • Family Pass starting at $40.

The Zoo's history is a regal one. It is the only zoo in the United States to be established by grants made by a sovereign monarch. In 1876, King Kalakaua made the lands near the slopes of Diamond Head available for the establishment of a grand public park for the people of his kingdom. The 300 acres (42 of which is the zoo) came to be known as Queen Kapio'lani Park, named after his wife. Today the zoo houses over 1,230 animals in specially designed habitats and averages 750,000 visitors a year.

First Find Prize (congrats to mah1985 for finding it first) Box is camouflage and contains several items. Hi, I placed this cache with the help of an experienced geocacher as part of a requirement for a class at UH. It is outside of the Honolulu Zoo, the hours for the zoo are 9-4:30 daily. There are a lot of pedestrians and you might not want to go at night because of the homeless problem in the area. Please be considerate of the plants. Thanks, good luck
