This is the our first Geocache Your Watershed cache, sponsored in part by Environment Canada. It is located off a dog trail at the south end of the lake. When it was placed, quite a few thistles were present. Sorry no FTF prize, as this is our first time making a cache
Geocache Your Watershed is a school program that is sponsored by Environment Canada. Its purpose is to increase the awareness of the importance and knowledge of local watersheds.
Chestermere Lake,is a 750 acre lake that has grown to be a important recreation area for Calgary and Chestermere. It is also part of the Hudson Bay Watershed, which means the water that flows from this area, will hopefully make its way to the Hudson Bay.
The lake was originally called Kinniburgh Slough, and in 1884 men from the CPR saw this as an excellent place to establish a network of irrigation canals. In 1906, Southern Alberta Land Company was established, and then became Canada Land and Irrigation Company. Over the years, and government involvement, the current system it is currently maintained and monitored by Alberta Environment.
Chestermere's water levels are adjusted to meet the local irrigation and domestic water demands of farmers, industry and towns. Therefore to sustain demand, a large portion of the lake's water is diverted from the Bow River, at weir near Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, to maintain this reservoir. From the original 3804 hectares, the lake is now part of a 12 141 hectare irrigation system.
