Eagle Aerie is one of over 30 caches along the Outback Way-finder Trail - the longest Geocache Trail in the world.
G'day Geocachers,
Eagle Aerie cache is located at a soaring-eagle elevation on a rugged rocky range formally called the Black Range. Locals refer to it as the Sleeping Woman - you'll know why when you get there! There is a rock cairn and trig point nearby. After settlement Australian surveyors defined state boundaries across the continent using a system of markers, monuments, cairns that relied on triangulation and trip points. The optical/mechanical equipment of the day included theodolites, circumferentors, chains, peramulators - now replaced by satellites, GPS and remote sensing devices. The early hardships for surveyors were extreme - terrain, drought, featureless plains, unfriendly locals, disease and death.
Finding this cache takes some leg work and a climb - not difficult but over sharp loose rock. Wear good boots and climb with care.
Access off the Outback Way is via a station track to the south. Junction coordinates are: 22.57.160s 135.45.460e
Activity: take your binoculars, a bird book and a picnic - sit and enjoy the view to the savannah plains and perhaps you will see the eagles soaring above scanning the rocks for a feed.
