Riddock Stand is one of over 30 caches along the Outback Way-finder Trail - the longest Geocache Trail in the world.
Riddock Stand cache is located at the Harts Range Racecourse on Aritaripitta land in the foothills of Harts Range - also known as 'Atitjere' to the local Aboriginal people. The extraordinarily picturesque ranges are popular with prospectors and fossickers and many leave with garnets, zircons and illusions of great fortune, but all can appreciate the uplifted majesty of the MacDonnell Ranges bioregion of Australia and the contrast with more horizontal bioregions in the outback.
All this is great, but Harts Range's greatest claim to fame is its Race Course and annual race meeting and picnic holiday weekend in August. The origin of the event lies in Harts Range Amateur Racing Club folklore but the 'facts' suggest that Bob Darken, the local police officer and the Webb brothers, from Mt Riddock Station enjoyed a 'spontaneous' competition so much they formed a club, graded a track, built a grandstand, formed a racing club and gazetted the annual race as 'Picnic Day'. First club race was in 1947. A tradition was born. Today the boys will race anything - including camels. A well designed and managed campground called Spotted Tiger is located about 2k beyond the race track.
Activity: Visit the Harts Range Racecourse and enjoy local area hospitality over the first weekend of August. Other times of the year, you can imagine the fun and excitement.
