I was taking the backroad from Berryessa to Lower Lake today and passed by Knoxville Public Lands. When I was a teenager, I used to drive my dune buggy all though these hills. I love this remote area because it is perfect for my kind of muggle free caching. This small cache is located just off the road. Please note vehicle requirements below before attempting this cache.
VERY IMPORTANT --- I have seen Rattlesnakes in this area, especially around larger rock formations as they are looking for shade. Please use caution, watch where you walk, and carry a sturdy walking stick with you to bang rocks before approaching. This will alert the snake and hopefully prevent any surprise encounters. I have used this tactic many times and the snakes have always rattled then moved away. If they don't move, then post a picture, go ahead and log the find anyway, and note the encounter in your log. I will give you credit for the find. This area is very remote and you could be the only one out here. Not worth taking any unnecessary chances. AND.... please please please keep close eye on your younger cachers.
PLEASE NOTE: I traversed the Knoxville Public Lands area (South to North) in my truck on 6/29/18 and did some cache maintenance. There is a internal road that goes end to end dumping back out on Knoxville Berryessa Rd. However... After the big fire the ripped through here a few years back, the road in many areas has seen the loose dirt washed out and thus has many exposed and loose rocks on the road. I was able to make the drive end to end in my Silverado 4x4 with no issues, but took it very slow and actually used 4WD high with truck in low gear to crawl up some of the sections. This was mainly for my own comfort and to ensure I didn't do anything stupid and puncture a tire. By entering via the south entrance and working your way north you will be going up hill through much of the rough areas. I find this easier as you won't be riding your brakes all the way. Added benefit is that I got to exercise the 4WD in my truck which hasn't been used much lately. It felt really good to do some tactical driving.
I have caches placed here at the south end (Knoxville 2 - Row of Boulders) and one at the north end (Knoxville 22 - In middle of nowhere). Both of these are easily accessible by car. However, (Knoxville 15- top of the ridge) will required a vehicle with ground clearance and a 4WD would be advisable (especially following a rain due to muddy conditions).
