A companion to
Inna-Gadda-Da-Butterfly. One afternoon, during a period where
my husband was having problems at work, I took him to Newhall park
for the first time. We went straight to this pond, and he was
shocked at how close the ducks and geese came to us. I said,
"Haven't you ever fed ducks before?" I think he said he never had.
I had done this sort of thing my whole life, and I never thought
anything of it.
While throwing bread out, a little girl ran up to us and asked
if she could have a piece so she could feed too. We gave her like a
quarter loaf and asked if she'd ever fed ducks before. She said she
never had. I watched her and my husband both feeding ducks and
geese for the first time, and I realized I'd taken this all for
granted. It never occurred to me that this was a special thing,
that not everyone gets to experience.
The problems Dan was having seemed to get lesser and lesser
every time we visited the ducks. A few weeks later, we started
having my mom join us when she was having problems with my dad.
When we lost my dad, they brought me there. Now we bring anyone who
needs a break or time to think. It's become our therapy, and it
only costs a buck or two a trip, for the full experience :)
I've since learned that bread is not good for
ducks, despite what I was unfortunately taught my whole life
(that's always fun to realise at 26 years old,
heh).
The cache is small - I just wanted to introduce people to my
therapeutic pond, because maybe some of you have never been here
before, or maybe some of you have never had the pleasure of feeding
ducks and geese. Be sure to bring some duck chow if you want to try
- and if you see one particularly loud and clumsy goose (oh, you'll
know him when you see him), say hello for us :)
Try to replace as you found it, because it can be pretty visible
from above if not placed "correctly" :)
