Geocache Description:

The Hike

Join us for a hike to the heart of Sid's Mountain on Saturday, March 3, 2007. We'll be meeting at the trailhead at 7:00 am. That's fairly early for those people who have to travel far to get there, but we'll have fewer than 12 hours of daylight in which to complete the hike. We can change the time if this seems too early, but 6:30 is actually the beginning of civil twilight, so we should easily be able to see well enough to begin hiking by 7:00.

The hike will be about 13 miles round trip, and our ultimate goal will be to reach the benchmark atop Sid's Mountain while enjoying the quiet and beauty of the Sid's Mountain Wilderness Study Area. There will be some steep and arduous ups-and-downs at the start as we cross North Salt Wash, but the majority of the hike will be on reasonably level ground (we'll gain about 800' of elevation over 4 miles) once we reach the plateau on top of Sid's Mountain. It's an out-and-back hike, so after reaching the benchmark we'll follow our tracks back to the trailhead the same way we came in.

Getting There

The posted coordinates are for the trailhead, but we can arrange to meet in Price and/or Ferron for carpooling. This will largely depend on who's coming and from where, so please post a note (or "Will Attend" log) to the cache page specifying your plans. For those coming from north of Price or staying in Price, we can meet there and head south as a group, and anyone from Emery County or farther south can either meet the rest of us in Ferron or we can pick you up on our way down.

I'll update this section as it gets closer to the event and we know more about who's planning on attending.

Essential Gear

You'll need to bring enough water to sustain you for the entire hike (I'll personally be bringing about 4 liters), food for the day, and whatever other essentials you deem necessary for such an undertaking. Sturdy & comfortable hiking shoes, a first aid kit, GPS, camera, cell phone, etc., are all recommended. Warm, layered clothing with a wind-proof outer layer is also a good idea--if it warms up enough you can always shed a layer or two, but if you don't bring them in the first place you could be left out in the cold.

The Weather Factor

The road from Ferron to the trailhead is about 20 miles long and starts out as a nice graveled road, but eventually deteriorates into a rougher clay-surfaced road that is impassable when wet, even to the average 4x4 vehicle. If, by the Wednesday before the hike, the roads are wet or the weather threatens to be wet, we'll postpone the hike until the following Saturday.
