The Inkwells offer the chance to see salmon leaping upstream after the first rains, to watch others swimming upstream from the nearby viewing area during spawning season, or to cool off in the water on hot summer days.
The pedestrian bridge is a good place to try to spot salmon as they jump up the inkwells just after a large rain. At other times in the spawning season, salmon can be seen in the creek below Peters Dam, following the trail from the parking area. At one point, the coho were so numerous that they filled the creeks. Today, they are endangered and it takes a little more effort find them. Some have made wishing poles to teach children about the salmon and call them back.

The salmon run has become a community event. Go out there on a Saturday morning after the first good rains of the season and you will find families walking along the creek, looking for the first returning salmon. . . The salmon are a thread that weaves together the pieces of a frayed landscape, connecting the watershed with the ocean and returning nutrients to the watershed, and also connecting us to this ancient cycle of renewal. And they are also a thread weaving together the human community . . .

In the summer, the Inkwells are popular places to cool off. The pools offer a place to relax by (or in) the water and have fun exploring the rocks and creek.
Park at the Leo Cronin viewing area just across the street. Or you can take the bike/hiking trail from Samuel Taylor park to the Inkwells.
The cache itself is a small container - large bison style - hidden from view in the usual location. It should not be too difficult to find but you may have to reach for it.
