Geocache Description:

Gillooly's interchange is reported to be the busiest interchange in South Africa, and the southern hemisphere, and links the R24 (east  - west bound) to the N3 (north – south bound).

The Gillooly's interchange runs between Edenvale, Befordview, and Germiston. And links the R24 from OR Tambo airport to the N3. The N12 from Witbank (Emalahleni) also feeds into the R24.
This interchange also forms part of the “Ring Road” around Johannesburg.

The originally built interchange had a clover leaf feed from the west bound R24 to north bound N3 traffic, and this caused mush congestion during peak hour traffic.
The whole interchange was upgraded in 2009, and the most significant improvement was the new fly-over for the R24 west bound traffic joining the N3 north bound traffic. This fly-over was opened on the 1st of June 2010, a short few days before the Soccer World Cup opening which was held here in South Africa.

Goba told Engineering News that the design employed is state-of-the-art engineering, while the incremental-launch construction method was highly sophisticated.
The bridge supports were located outside the existing roadway and, once completed, the bridge was launched incrementally over the existing roadways from pier to pier. The components were constructed on the verges and in the medians of the existing carriageways of the N3 and N12 freeways, which is one of the country's busiest interchanges.
Goba said that the geometry was particularly complex, as the bridge is on a 137-m spatial horizontal curve, a 225-m spatial vertical curve and has a varying cross fall towards the inside.
