A Short cache, taking less than an hour, but with a total climb of about 200m, and a round trip of about 3km taking in some great views. Tracks can be muddy and slippy in bad weather.
This is one of a number of caches based around the old tramroad in Cwmbran which used to run from the quarry at the top down into two locks where the cargo was loaded onto canal boats. Torfaen County Borough have installed a number of information boards along the route which are quite informative about the industrial history of the area.
This multicache starts part way up the tramroad, known locally as the incline, outside two very nice public houses both of which serve good food and refreshments ideal for weary cachers.
The initial coordinates are for TTVC1 the 1st virtual cache:
N51 38.392 W003 03.681
At these coordinates translate the unusual name of the pub into a set of numbers using the keypad of a mobile phone to give the coordinates of TTVC2, which can be found using the numbers derived at TTVC1 at coordinates
N51 38.aab W003 03.cdc
Where a = 3rd - 1st
b = 5th – 6th
c = 2nd
d = 7th
TTVC3 can be found at:
N51 38.efg W003 03.hif
Where
e is the number of letters in the first word of the attractive terrace
f is the number of views
g is the number of Os that can be seen on the sign
h twice the number of houses the sign indicates
i is the number of letters in the hyphenated view (don't count the hyphens or the word view)
There used to be an information board at these coordinates, but it seems to have disappeared so I've had to make use of an alternative sign instead.
At TTVC3 what is 5km away, take this word, and again using the keypad of a mobile phone convert it into a set of numbers. The real cache TTRC4 can then be found, using the numbers derived at TTVC3 at coordinates:
N51 38.jkl W003 04.mnp
Where j = 3rd
k = 4th + 5th
l = 6th
m = 7th
n = 8th - 7th
p = 2nd
Be sure to enjoy the fantastic views over the Severn estuary taking in both bridges, the footpaths to the cache are quite clear, but also steep in places and can be muddy in bad weather. Please hide carefully when done as this cache has had to be moved due to muggles, this area is very popular with children and teenagers.
Original cache treasures are: a pocket kite, folding toolkit, yoyo, 2 carabiners, small scissors, tweezers and a small screwdriver.
