A small traditional cache on Sully Island.
This small tidal island lies off the coast between Barry and Penarth and can be reached via a causeway accessible approximately 3 hours either side of low tide. We suggest you check the tide times before attempting this cache.
Please do not start the cache within 4 hours of the rising high tide – the tide rises rapidly and the currents are strong - people have died attempting the journey.
Evidence of a fort lies on the island's south-eastern headland and archaeological digs have found evidence of the Romans and Vikings using it, almost certainly because of its strategic position in the Bristol Channel. In the 16th and 17th centuries the island was used as a base by pirates and smugglers. Many ships have been wrecked on its shore and one such wreck can still be seen on the northern side.
The causeway is rock and pebble with a sprinkling of seaweed, and of course most probably wet and slippery. Good footwear is essential. Please take care.
The cache is a 0.3l klip-lock box in a camo-bag - small swaps only. Please re-hide the cache as you found it and ensure it can not be seen. The path heading directly towards the cache is a little over-grown (although passable even in shorts) so you may wish to circle around and approach from the south.
Pay & Display parking (24x7) is available at the public house (N 51°24.009', W 3°11.898) in Swanbridge. The parking charge can be set against the purchase of food at the pub.
Alternative on-street parking is available on Clevedon Avenue (N 51°24.106', W 3°12.558') and a footpath at the southern end of the road gives access to the beach & coastal footpath.
PS. If you do get caught on the island you will be relieved to know that although you are surrounded by the second highest tide in the world at 40 feet, even the highest tide does not cover the whole island!
