Looking west from this point, an Eocine Dike of Great Import.
There we were going though the Paradise Valley in our motorcoach, when from the rear compartment came the call "what’s that?". It came from the E-daughter pointing out the window at a great example of an Eocene Dike. I took this opportunity to tell her about the Eocene Dike and how it was made about 30 million years ago. This wall of black basalt rock was injected as molten magma into a crack in horizontally bedded volcanic
conglomerates. At this point she interrupts and asks "what’s a conglomerate?" A conglomerate is sort of like cement, you know, those bags I buy at the home repair store. There are a bunch of smaller rocks and boulders that were joined together by the magma when it cools. Like the cement does when I add water, the water helps the silica form a bond between all those little pebbles just like the magma does gets in between all the boulders then cools and keeps it together and makes these rocks stronger than the surrounding rock. Because the dike rock resists weathering better than the surrounding volcanic conglomerates it erodes slowly, and remains as a tall wall.
There is another example of an Eocene Dike near the "Sliding
with the Devil" cache at these coordinates: N 45° 05.166
W 110° 46.554.
