Geocache Description:

This is the first cache in my Birdwatch Series - unsurprisingly it will take you to some of the places I like to go birdwatching! There is a small offroad area that can be used for parking only a short distance from the cache.

The idea behind this cache series is to bring more people to some places that I go birdwatching, but all of the caches are in places where it's great to go for a walk.

This cache is in a smallish clip-lock box container whose original contents include a travel bug and some empty film canisters to take for caches as well as the logbook and pencil.

It is located along a road called Moss Lane which is on the northern border of Astley Moss. Astley Moss is a beautiful agricultural and mossland area with a wide variety of bird and wildlife at different times of the year. I think the view along Moss Lane to be stunning, particularly on sunny spring or summer days. I still find it difficult to believe that this little oasis is only five minutes off the East Lancs Road.

From this area I've seen the following birds during the year:

  • Little Owl
  • Buzzard
  • Kestrel
  • Jay
  • Cormorant
  • Lapwing
  • Wheatear
  • Mistle Thrush
  • Pied Wagtail
  • Great Tit
  • Chaffinch
  • Red Legged Partridge
  • Pheasant
  • Carrion Crow
  • Woodpigeon

There's an illustrated guide to the Astley Moss and Rindle Road areas from a birding point of view here at the Manchester Birding Website. and if you want to know what's been seen recently look here on the Astley, Chat and Irlam Moss thread of the Manchester Birding Forum.

Don't forget to take your binoculars with you and good luck! I'm looking forward to reading your logs.
