This cache is located at 40 Acre Rock Preserve. This 1,300 acre attraction has several hiking trails (including a newly re-established one that completely circles the beaver pond), small waterfalls, a cave, and, of course, the large granite rock. The tiny plants, "amphianthus", growing in pools on the rock are very rare- found in only 5 other places in the world. These pools are also believed to have been used by the Catawba Indians for collecting water and grinding corn.
If you have time, look for the long, narrow indentation on the rock surface. This is known as "Devil's Footprint." A local folklore is that the devil sat down on the rock to rest and left his mark there by the heavy chains he dragged after him. (Footnote: Essay by Louise Pettus)
The terrain difficulty may be greater if you park in the gravel lot near the beaver pond (east side).
The cache is in a 1 gallon, plastic jar. Please recover well when replacing.
