After the destruction of the palace in the 15th century, the city continued to be inhabited in the Mycenaean and Geometric periods. The Hellenistic city was extremely prosperous; houses of the period are to be seen in the west court (upper terrace) of the palace.
In the 3rd century B.C. it was destroyed by the neighbouring city of Gortys. Traces of habitation dating from the Venetian period are scattered in the whole area. The archaeological investigation of Phaestos started in 1884 by F. Halbherr and continued by the Italian Archaeological School at Athens and by Doro Levi.
The cache
The cache is not hidden in the archeological site but at the small church of Aghios Georgios, 150 m to the west, in the ruined part of it.
You can park at the archaeological site parking place and, in fact, it’s a drive-in cache. It’s a lock’n’lock plastic container with a pen, a logbook, the geocaching note and some goodies to trade.
In summer it’s quite a crowded area, so, please, try not to attract muggles’ attention and hide it well again.
