Andrew “Agent Orange” Fleckinstein was a veteran of Vietnam. He served his country from 65’- 73’ by choice and was proud of it. During his time in the US Navy he served as a Boat Captain on a Patrol Boat Riverine, commonly known as a PBR. The majority of his missions were to stop and search river traffic for combatants and arms shipments. Occasionally he and the crew would extract Seals from covert operations or spray Napalm.

During his time in Vietnam he was also exposed to large quantities of “Rainbow Herbicides,” most notably Agent Orange.

After leaving the Navy Andrew settled down and got married. He tried to forget everything that had happened “over there” but had regular bouts of severe depression. His wife, Staci, had numerous miscarriages his behavior would swing wildly from mild mannered and pleasant to angry and violent. All of these things he attributed to his exposure to Agent Orange. After numerous assaults Staci left him. He filed suit against the manufacturer of Agent Orange, DOW Chemical, but the road to settlement was long. He was unreliable and had no steady job so money was always an issue.

Andrew was recruited for the heist and had no qualms about putting his life on the line. Besides, the plan was good and he was only a get-away driver. He had nothing to lose and everything to gain. All he had to do now was stay out of jail and alive for a few years to collect his share. That was a problem.

Andrew spent money like he had it. He wasn’t buying possessions like homes, cars or clothing. He was buying drinks, women, and drugs. His mood swings along with his new lifestyle made for trouble with the law. Drug possession, prostitution, DUI, illegal fire arms, and other charges had him in prison, probably for life. His health was deteriorating and he had almost given up hope of ever getting out. Then his luck changed.

“Drew, you have a visitor,” shouted the guard. Andrew had no idea who it was. It was his lawyer. “There seems to be a clerical mistake on your record.” “Yeah, so?”, Andrew responded. “If I file an appeal it might get you out of here.” “Do it.”

A few weeks later Andrew found himself being released on a technicality. He didn’t care how, he was just glad to be out. Not glad enough to change his ways though.

Within 3 days of getting out he was high. He was having delusions and thought he was back in Vietnam. He was commanding the PBR again and they were taking heavy fire. Little did he know that he was commanding a group of school children on the play ground. Parents made frantic calls to police as Andrew ordered one of the children to Semaphore flag for help. By this time the police had arrived and were barking orders with pistols drawn. All Andrew heard was enemy screaming. With the child having no idea of what to do he did it himself. That is where the end started. He grabbed a boy and ripped his shirt off to use as a flag. He threw the boy to the ground and was looking for a second flag. The next flag he saw was a police officer twenty feet away. Andrew lunged toward the cop. The cop fearing for his life squeezed the trigger on his pistol multiple times.

Andrew was dead before he hit the ground.
