These mines played a very important part in the Burdett-Grassy Lake area and began with the first settlers around 1903. Outcropping of coal along the coulee banks probably led to the first digging for coal. This was a substitute for buffalo chips and more expensive coal shipped by rail. The coal was hauled by team and wagon, for many it was a long journey.
