Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the top of Tortolita Mountain, the prominent high point on the eastern edge of the range. It is not well known to most people that this area is part of Pima County's Tortolita Mountain Park. Currently, there are no developed features of this park making it a great place to find solitude. I believe there is a proposal to expand the park another 4500 acres East and West of the current boundary which will provide a preserved place for wildlife to travel between the Tortolitas and the Catalinas. This is also one of the few places left in Southern Arizona where you may get a change to glimpse a herd of wild horses.

To access this area take Oracle road North of Catalina and turn West on Rail-X Ranch Road. The turnoff is right past the Sanchez Nursery. Travel on this road for appx. 5 miles until you reach the Crow Windmill. I parked at 32° 30.982 111°00.711. This road is passenger car friendly as long as the road is not wet. This is State Trust Land and a permit is required to be on this land legally.

From the parking area Tortolita peak is appx. 1100' feet higher than you. The route is cross country for the most part although you may find intermittent animal trails. On the route I used, the terrain allowed for quick progress. On this short hike, the higher you climb the better the views become. It is interesting to see how contrasting the vegetation is on the North side of the range compared with the South side. Please cover up cache as well as you can, making sure it is completely hidden from view. The cache is NOT a summit log. It is located appx. 60 feet south of it and is labeled on the inside lid.

2/24/06 I have been asked if I would maintain this cache for RS Arizona and I am very happy to accept this task. -ShadowAce
