Back in the last century, a man settled in the Flinn Springs
valley where he built a house and planted some jade plants around a
cactus. He raised cattle, so he built a large catchment for
water.
For many years, he worked very hard, and when he was 51 he had a
total of 75 cows, 35 calves, and one bull. Prior to his 52nd
birthday, he decided he did not want to be in the cattle business
anymore. He sold many of the cows and calves, but before he could
sell the rest, some cattle rustlers came along and stole the
remaining animals leaving him with zero, zip, nada.
People still like to go out to see his handiwork -- the house
foundation, the huge cactus, the amazing jade plants, and
especially the stone water catchment.
Once they arrive at the cistern, they see it is not very far to
the place where this earlier settler left a small treasure box.
Brave souls who wander further
Up, Up, and Away using the meandering, switch-backing trail,
get to find still another treasure.
Travelers today need to watch out for rattlesnakes, poison oak
and ticks, however, they are rewarded with a great adventure and
fantastic views, even if they do have to listen to the roar of a
modern freeway through a valley that once was pristine and
quiet.
