On the Ozark Trail 2 miles from Mina Sauk Falls. This cache requires steep climbs over broken rock but is suitable for children 8 and over.
The Toll Gate is a 50 feet high 30 feet wide massive monolith of orange rhyolite with a 8 foot wide gap blocking the Old Arkansas Rd. This road is on the northern route of the Trail of Tears. It received its name because wagons had to be unloaded and turned on edge to get through the gap. The Toll Gate is said to be haunted by a great demon of the Piankishas Indian tribe, who sucks the souls of unwary travelers. This I almost believe as one hot summer night I decided to beat the heat and hike the trail under a full moon. Soon after I entered the valley of the Toll Gate a strange silence came over the forest. I saw a creeping fog, green in the moonlight filling the valley floor. I felt that something was watching me and I heard movement on the trail behind me. When I turned nothing was there but I quickly retreated back up the mountain to the Falls. I’ll not hike there at night ever again. The Toll Gate is one of three caches along the Ozark Trail be sure to visit them all.
