The Queen's River Vista Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

But the Queen "lost her head" before ever getting to see this beautiful vista! This small camo'd bottle is hidden near the Marie Antoinette Overlook. DAYTIME CACHING ONLY, so you can enjoy the pretty view of the Susquehanna River winding thru Asylum Twp. far below.

Please respect the DAYTIME ONLY request, or I cut this cache off at the neck!

The cache is starting out with a logbook & pen (but BYOP), some homemade fridge magnets of the views, & some royal purple (amethyst crystals). I'm rating it a 2 difficulty as you will need to be very stealthy. (HIGH MUGGLE ZONE!)

I love my Endless Mountains! I can't imagine living any place that's completely flat. This scenic stretch of US-6 offers some of the region's best views. Just east is the Wyalusing Rocks vista, home of GC3FCVK (formerly GC1YHQ1) . And there are plenty of pretty views in between and before & after.

While this vista doesn't take you out on ledges like Wyalusing Rocks, I think I like it better. Maybe the view below just looks more pristine to me. The farms look older, and I like the way the river curves. Changes may be in store, time will tell. You will have to decide what you prefer.

Or maybe it's because of the charming stone work. This overlook area was built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Rt. 6 use to go closer to the edge back then. If you approach from the west, you can still see the old route in the rock cut.

And maybe I like it because of the romantic legend associated with “French Azilum.” You can read the monument & history plaque at this overlook to tell you all about that. The French refugee colony existed from 1793 – 1803 near the pretty bend in the river below. Or check out GC1CZ59 or the historic site’s website to learn more.

Legend has it that the colony was to be the new safe haven for Queen Marie Antoinette, refuge from “The Terror” of the French Revolution. But she “danced with Mdm. Guillotine” very early on in the colony’s history, so it’s unlikely. But it makes for a great story!

You can see the French Azilum historic site just to the left of the bend in the river as looking upstream. The tall white house just past the red barn is Laporte House. It was built in 1836 by the son of one of the original refugees. You can probably also make out the picnic pavilion and the late 1700’s era log cabin used to tell the history.

If you’ve got really great eyes or some good binoculars, you might be able to make out a bald eagle’s nest. It's high in a sycamore tree on the river island across from the French Azilum historic site. My 7x35 binocs let me see the nest, but not what's inside.

Please practice CITO'ing here. You will likely have plenty of opportunity. And there are trash barrels conveniently nearby.

A big thanks to Caribou Hunter for his graciousness & assistance on getting this cache placed.

Congratulations to rbsb178 for FTF! Glad you liked the eagles' nest!

THOSE WITH YOUNG FAMILIES may wish to schedule your visit during the day rather than evening hours due to potential muggle activity.

This cache was placed with permission. Please e-mail me thru gc if there are any problems, thanks!
