This cache is placed less than 150 feet off of a nature trail
owned and maintained by the Audubon Park Homeowners Association. I
obtained the permission of the HOA board before placing this cache.
The trail roughly follows a stream and a utility easement from
Sedwick Drive to the Audubon Park common areas (pool, playground,
etc.).
Note:See the parking waypoints for two options on how to
access. Depending on how you access you will either see the plain
"No Trespassing" sign at the trailhead near Sedwick, that really
means "Don't park here, fish in the creek, and make a big mess" or
you will (might? I know a lot of people never notice them) see the
pretty green ones by the road driving in that really mean "Don't
come knock on our doors and try to sell us stuff". If either of
these make anyone uncomfortable, please let me know. If only
everyone were as polite as geocachers we'd have no need for the
signs :)
The cache is named for the Buckeye trees in the area and along
the trail. I have seen turtles, black snakes, wild ducks, and of
course frogs and toads along the trail and deer tracks but no deer
(yet). Neighbors have reported seeing a fox a few years back, and
there are older signs of beaver activity.
This cache will not be accessible after periods of heavy rain.
The high waters also bring more trash from upstream, so please
"cache in, trash out". Spiders (and their webs) and ticks are
present in the usual frequencies for the region and there are
mosquitoes due to the nearby water.
The cache itself is a small ammo box painted mostly black with
"GEOCACHE" stenciled on the side of it. It is completely hidden
from view, but should still be fairly easy to find, especially with
the hints. Please hide it back the same way when you are done. The
cache is tethered in case the water gets really high (hurricanes
anyone?), but there is a carabiner for easy attach/detach.
The first part of the trail is paved and begins on Sedwick Drive
around N 35° 53.215 W 78° 53.960. There is a wide shoulder across
the street that should be fine for parking. Take an immediate left
after crossing the bridge to enter the nature trail proper. Audubon
Park residents can begin a slightly longer hike from the playground
area.
