Rafts Stalk Up! Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

PisoMojado: After nearly six years, I think it's time this one was archived. This was the very first cache I placed, and I think I'd make it less complex next time.

This is such a neat spot in Redwood City that I hope someone puts another cache down here, as the dam is quite a little surprise.

Geocache Description:

This is an offset cache involving just a little math in a riparian oasis in the hills of Redwood City. One way distance is ~.4 miles. Wear sturdy shoes.

In 1951, Morris Stulsaft donated 38 acres of oak-shaded valley land to Redwood City to create the park that now bears his name (and is also an anagram to the cache name). The land was originally part of the J.B. Shroeder estate, dating back to the 1880's. Traces of the former estate can still be seen throughout the park, including the remains of a stone dam that was used to collect water for nurseries downstream.

The most straightforward access to the park is via Farm Hill Road. Park by the crayons (you'll know them when you see them) and follow the coordinates above to a campground in the middle of the park.

Once there, gather information to put together the final location of the cache.

A = the last digit of the ordinance detailing Redwood City's leash law (i.e., 25.1.1D)
B = # of campfire pits
C = total # of BBQ pits in the general vicinity
D = # of log seats in the amphitheatre

Checksum (A+B+C+D) = 18

Now that you've collected the data, sit down at one of the picnic tables and piece together the final coordinates for the cache:

Lat = N 37.27.[Ax(D^2)]-B
Long = W 122.14.[(C^A)xD]-5

(Note that ^ denotes "to the power of", so D^2 is D squared, and C^A is C to the A power, or C times itself A times.)

You may have some GPS difficulties due to tree coverage. To help out, the cache is within 25' of the main attraction of this spot. The cache is a glass jar about six inches tall and 3.5" in diameter. It's not underwater, in the ground or in a bush.

Once you've (hopefully) found the cache, sit and enjoy the zen tranquility of the spot for a moment. I love coming here just to hang out.
