Geocache Description:

Reno's First Shopping Center (The Village Shopping Center) (Westfield Village) (Cal-Booth)

The Village Shopping Center was opened November 4, 1955 on 7 1/2 acres in 1955, by Jack Hanson for about $1,000,000.

The original establishments included Hanson's Market, Sprouse-Reitz Variety Store, Shelly's Village Hardware, Village Drug, Village Beauty Shop, Village Records & TV, the Village Restaurant, Spezia Cleaners and finally the Village Barber Shop (where I received my first haircut).

The barber shop has been operated by Enzo Buonamici since it since about 1957! He, Bill and Art, the resident barbers, cut a great head of hair. Go visit them, and just listen to the stories that circulate through the room while you wait for your turn in the chair. Besides the barbershop, the longest tenured tenants include, the Village Shoe Repair (owned by Dave), The Laundromat, The Truckee River Bar & Grill (Great Food!), Union 76, Godfather's Pizza, and of course, Longs Drug Store, where I got my first real job as a cacher (I mean Cashier) in high school!

Through the years, the Village has seen alot of things. Everything from an Albertson's as an anchor store to taped music bellowing from under the covered walkway, from florists to chinese food, even a photomat booth turned coffee drive-thru, this mall has it all. In fact, it has had so much to offer over the years that the following Reno locals and notable people have shopped here:

Charles Mapes (Owner, Mapes Hotel), Jane Puliz (Owner, Puliz Moving & Storage), Jerry Whitehead (Judge, presiding over 1989 Judas Priest case), Rick Costa (former frontman for The Doubting Thomas Band & The Band Gogh), Bill Raggio (NV Senator), Pete Sefrazza (former Mayor of Reno), Mills Lane (Attorney, Judge, TV personality, & Boxing Referee) Dick Gamick (District Attorney), Jerry & Sherry Keefhaver (My Parents), Howard McKibben (US District Court Judge), Brian Sandoval (former NV Attorney General & current US District Court Judge), George Vicari & Frank Graves (former Owners of LeFleur Florist), Rollan Melton (Reno Gazette Journal, Columnist), Karl Breckenridge (RGJ Columnist & Writer), Jack Neal (Teacher & Arts Critic), Tim Healion (Owner, Deux Gros Nez Coffee Shop "Nevada's First Full Blown Coffee Shop," & Promoter of The Tour De Nez bike race) Greg LeMond (Internationally known cyclist & 3 time Tour De France winner), Ed Carlson (The Waver), Mrs. Walley (Poet, Eccentric), and maybe even you...

Enjoy the cache and the history. If you know more about the Village, write about it in your log...
