Geocache Description:

THIS EVENT HAS ENDED. THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED! Our family has been cleaning up glass from this beautiful beach for years and unfortunately have barely put a dent in it!

Who: Geocachers and the community

What: Beach Clean-up (Cache In Trash Out)

When: July 19, 2009, 9:00AM

Where: Brentwood Bay, Verdier Park beside ferry dock

Why: To improve the beaches for future generations

Last updated Saturday, July 15, 2009

The area of focus is a 500m stretch of beach which unfortunately has a large amount of glass on it. What is also unfortunate is that the bay doesn't get very much tidal flow and thus does not round the glass down very quickly, if at all. Although this will never be a barefoot beach because there are still barnacles, which are natural, this beach is still very rich with biodiversity. Why this day? July 19th at 9:14 AM will have the lowest weekend tide of the whole summer which makes it better for collecting as much trash as possible.

I have partnered with the Brentwood Lodge and other businesses to donate door prizes for participants. Also 120 handouts about the event have been distributed to local homes as well 25 posters around town. This should be quite a big CITO and a great community event! The door prizes include Villages Pizza gift certifcates, Brentwood Lodge kayak rentals, Rexall and Pharmasave Gift Baskets, Level Ground fair trade coffee, and gifts from the Hallmark Thought Shop.

There are two island caches in the bay which are walkable at low tide. It would be appreciated to go for those before the event or to go for them afterwards by borrowing Chris and Helens' kayaks which they have generously lent out. The tide starts coming back in at 9:14AM so that's why I have scheduled for 8:15AM but any time around there is fine. I will be at a table set up at Verdier Park.

  • Small pails
  • Shoes that you don't mind getting a bit wet or possibly muddy in the lower tidal zones

Transportation

Driving

There are roughly a dozen parking spots at Verdier Park, which could be limited. Please carpool if possible. I will also see about getting permission for the use of the Lodge's parking lot.

Mill Bay Ferry Schedule

GZ is right at the ferry dock so Cowichan Valley cachers can easily park and ride the ferry over without the long drive.
