Geocache Description:

Steep walk up from boat landing, but easy walk if arriving by helicopter

Lundy island is about 3 miles long by half a mile wide in the Bristol Channel to the north of Ilfracombe on the North Devon coast. It is of extreme heritage interest, both archaeologically (there are iron age sites here) and from the natural history point of view (it is a seabird sanctuary and a coastal heritage site). Further details about the island may be obtained from (visit link)

In summer the island may be reached by boat from Ilfracombe or Bideford, and there is now a winter helicopter service on Mondays and Fridays from Hartland Point (6 minute flight). Alternatively, for a landing fee of £3.50 geocachers with their own boat and with appropriate gear and experience may make their own way (sea kayaks are frequent visitors in settled weather).

There should be time to locate this cache during a day visit, provided you don't spend too much time in the tavern, and also take in DJH's virtual cache, not too far from this one (put "Lundy" into the key-word search). I have named my cache after Jordan de Marisco, the first recorded owner/administrator of the island in AD 1150. He is immortalised in the name of the Marisco Tavern, from which you can obtain meals, snacks and a selection of local ales.

The original contents of the cache are: small cuddly rabbit; Swedish wooden key ring; a horse brass; tin of anchovy fillets; hand lens; ceramic teddy bear; a bone china Lake District souvenir thimble; Log book and pencil (please leave these).
