Geocache Description:

Site of British WWII Air Force Crash

On February 20, 1943 three British AT-6 Training Aircraft of the British Flying School #1 in Terrell, Texas took off for a training flight to Miami, OK. The weather was very foggy. One aircraft turned back, the other two kept on going. Both planes crashed near here. One nosedived in with such an impact that it raised a boulder to a position that it was called "a natural gravestone" by the local residents.

Each of the two aircraft carried a crew of two, a pilot and a navigator.

The four British airmen who perished in the crash were:
Pilot: Vincent Henry Cockman
Navigator: Frank R. Fostie
Pilot: John Minty Hosier
Navigator: Marrien Leslie Jensen

Local citizens recovered the bodies which were returned to Terrell for burial.

Fast forward 54 years to 1997 when an elementary school class in Rattan, OK took an interest in what happened. The kids with the help of the Library of Congress found out what happened and where. Three years later through the efforts of these children a monument was dedicated. Many relatives of the deceased flyers made the trip from England to Oklahoma to attend the dedication on the 57th anniversary of the crashes, February 20, 2000.

The monument is a memorial to the British Flyers who died far away from home training to fight for the country. It is also in honor of a few children and their teachers who took an interest in their story and worked hard to keep it alive.
