Geocache Description:

One of a series of caches originating from the beautiful Illinois River Road out of Selma.

The Illinois River Road out of Selma takes you along the beautiful Illinois River Canyon. In fall, winter and spring, this is a magical location you will usually have to yourself. Be forewarned that in summer it becomes a madhouse of people, all flocking to the fabulous swimming holes and camping sites. The road in is paved to the turnoff to Swinging Bridge and then it becomes dirt. It is steep and if its been raining can be slippery. Before you drive down, consider if your car is up to making the trip back up! It's a LONG way to arrange for a tow! You can park at either the upper or lower areas.

Swinging Bridge is a fabulous spot - a suspension bridge worthy of an Indiana Jones movie! This cache takes you across the bridge and up-river to the Fall Creek trail.

After crossing the bridge, look for a faint trail that hugs the cliff wall. The trail is rough and rocky and slippery in spots. Eventually you'll make your way to the rapidly disappearing Fall Creek trail, which suffered considerable damage in the Biscuit Fire. The trail has blow downs, slid away areas and what appears to be plenty of poison oak. It's a shame that literally millions of dollars have been invested in making improvements along the Illinois River Road ( bathrooms, camping and picnicng areas) but no agency has taken the initiative to reclaim this trail. We are heading back with clippers and saws and will attempt to get the trail more passable. The trail is a long trail that eventually winds up high in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness (if it is still passable). We stopped at the creek crossing this time.
