The Joseph L. Block was originally launched in February 1976 as a part of the Inland Steel Company fleet.
The boat now sails with the U.S. Indiana Harbor Steamship Company and is a self loading bulk carrier.
This boat had a fair share of problems over the years from many engine problems to a few mishaps. It was first grounded in January 1990, again in October the same year. In 1996 it had hull damage from ice, then scraped bottom in 1999 without damages.
The Boat is just over 728 feet in length and has a maximum load capacity of 37,200 tons.
It is powered by 2 V20 cylinders, 3,600 horsepower diesel engines.
